The ★ Butterfly Knife | Doppler Phase 4 in Factory New (FN) is the blue phase of Doppler in CS2. By price it is the second among the regular phases of this finish on the butterfly. Covert rank, with the ★ mark. The knife drops from the Spectrum Case and Spectrum 2 Case. The phase's scale ends at 0.08: the top wear takes 0.00 to 0.07, and Minimal Wear (MW) takes the last hundredth.
What the ★ Butterfly Knife | Doppler Phase 4 looks like in Factory New
The blade is dark blue. Near the tip it is lighter and closer to ultramarine, and toward the heel it thickens to an inky shade. Black marbled swirls run across the flat. The handles are black, a bright blue stripe runs along each half, and the latch is blue too. The cutting edge is left light.
In Factory New the lacquer is intact on both the edge and the handle ribs. Wear takes the blade's tip and the raised ribs first, which is exactly where Minimal Wear differs from the top wear. Wear is fixed at the drop, and a Factory New copy stays that way for good.
Where the ★ Butterfly Knife | Doppler Phase 4 came from
Valve drew the finish itself, and no Workshop submission stands behind it. Doppler reached the butterfly on March 15, 2017, and in Valve's catalog it is number 421. The knife itself came out in 2014, so the finish got to it three years later. The Karambit and the M9 Bayonet received Doppler earlier, on January 8, 2015.
Phase and pattern
The phase is part of the item name, and the buyer picks Phase 4 personally. Phases 1 to 4 are the regular ones, and Ruby, Sapphire and Black Pearl are gems, rare variants of Doppler. Sapphire is blue as well, but it is sold as a separate item and costs several times more.
Copies of Phase 4 differ by pattern index: it shifts the ratio of blue to black and where the colors sit on the blade. Copies with an entirely blue blade are prized under the nickname "Max Blue".
What to check before buying
Before taking the ★ Butterfly Knife | Doppler Phase 4, look at these points:
- the phase in the lot title: Phase 4 and Sapphire are separate items even though both are blue;
- the face of the blade: the more clean blue on it, the closer the copy is to "Max Blue";
- the name tag: if someone else's name is already on the knife, it passes to the buyer along with the item;
- float: the 0.00 to 0.07 band is short, and by eye the copies barely diverge.
What the ★ Butterfly Knife | Doppler Phase 4 costs in Factory New
Among the regular phases of the butterfly, Phase 4 is second by price. Phase 2 is about 1.6 times higher, Phase 1 is a ninth cheaper, and Phase 3 is a quarter cheaper.
Across the whole model, Phase 4 is seventh from the top: four gems, Crimson Web and Phase 2 stand above it. Sapphire is 2.3 times Phase 4. Below come Fade, a fifth cheaper, and Ultraviolet.
Getting the ★ Butterfly Knife | Doppler Phase 4
The knife drops from the Spectrum Case and Spectrum 2 Case as a rare ★ item. The blue phase comes by chance: Phase 4 cannot be ordered at the opening. A trade-up is a lottery too. Five Covert skins of one collection turn into one ★ item, and the model and finish are not chosen there. The phase you want is bought as a ready listing.

Who this wear suits
