Overnight on October 7, 2026, Valve dropped the Trove of Terror into Dota 2. The treasure holds 15 Immortal sets with an eerie, Lovecraftian feel and two arcanas at once: Tidehunter's first-ever arcana and the long-awaited return of the Drow Ranger arcana.
Below we break down what's in the chest, how much an opening costs, what you get for 12, 40 and 50 treasures, and why players are unhappy with the trading restrictions.
What's inside the Trove of Terror
The highlights are two Ultra Rare arcanas. The rest is 15 Immortal sets, and nearly every one of them changes ability effects, not just the hero's appearance.
Maw of the Megalodon — Tidehunter arcana
This is the first arcana for Tidehunter. The hero turns into a megalodon shark with a new model, animations, effects, taunts and voice lines. He also hauls a corpse behind him — according to Valve, it's both his favorite toy and his food supply.
The arcana has three styles: the standard blue shark, The Hammer of Maelrawn and Unfathomable Hunger. The first is available right away; the other two unlock as you play the hero.
Dread Retribution — the Drow Ranger arcana returns
The Drow arcana first appeared in December 2021 in the Aghanim's Labyrinth Battle Pass, as the reward for level 333. It hasn't been sold anywhere since, and now, almost five years later, it's back.
In the Trove of Terror the arcana comes together with the new Sepulchral Stalker set and additional styles. Drow can look the way she did in 2021 or take on a new, grimmer form. According to media reports, players who already own the arcana will receive only the new set.

Price, drop rates and opening rewards
One Trove of Terror opening costs $4.99. The more treasures you open, the more bonuses you get on top:
Openings | Reward | Approximate total |
|---|---|---|
12 | Obscene Eye Ball — a new look for the Tormentor | ≈ $60 |
40 | R'shan the Eternal — a Roshan restyle and a Baby Roshan courier | ≈ $200 |
50 | Guaranteed arcana (one or both — sources disagree) | ≈ $250 |
How the drop rates work
The odds increase with every opening that doesn't give you a rare item and reset after a drop. On the first opening they are:
- Rare — 1 in 2,000;
- Very Rare — 1 in 20,000;
- Ultra Rare (arcana) — 1 in 100,000.
Don't count on getting lucky early: by some estimates, the chance of pulling an arcana within the first 20 openings is 14% at most. On the other hand, an arcana is guaranteed by the 50th opening. Whether that's one of the two or both at once, sources say different things, so it's best to check the exact terms in the treasure's in-game description.
There's also a way to get rid of extras: six unwanted sets can be exchanged for one additional treasure.
Can you sell or trade the items?
No. Items from the Trove of Terror can't be gifted, sold on the Steam Community Market or traded: whatever drops stays in your inventory for good — at least for now.
Players didn't take it well. Items from earlier treasures could at least be gifted, but now you can't even pass a duplicate arcana to a friend. Players also report that in the first hours after release the restrictions didn't always work, but that was quickly patched. Valve hasn't said whether the restrictions will be lifted later.
If you'd rather not play a $250 lottery, there's another route: buy arcanas and sets that are already out and trade freely. More on that below.
Drow Ranger, Legion Commander and Terrorblade arcanas now come in several parts
According to Cybersport.ru, in the same update Valve quietly reworked three older arcanas. Each used to occupy a single slot — head or weapon. Now the main part sits in a new "Hero Base" slot, and some elements became separate items:
- Drow Ranger — the crossbow;
- Legion Commander — the swords;
- Terrorblade — the helmet.
Other outlets describe the change in detail only for Terrorblade, and Valve hasn't officially explained anything. Reportedly, after the split Terrorblade's gems ended up in two slots at once, and players quickly found a way to get an extra gem.
Whether the arcana parts will be tradable separately is still unclear.
It's also reported that the Legion Commander arcana disappeared from the in-game store but is still available on the Steam Community Market. Valve hasn't commented on this either.
Where to buy Dota 2 arcanas right now
The new Trove of Terror arcanas can't be traded yet, but dozens of other arcanas and sets are available on the LIS-SKINS Dota 2 market. Many items cost less than on the Steam Community Market, and the skin is yours straight away — no roulette, no 50 treasures.
If you play the heroes from this update, take a look at their arcanas:
- Fractal Horns of Inner Abysm — the Terrorblade arcana, the very one that's now split into a base and a helmet. It also comes in Inscribed, Autographed and Exalted versions;
- Feast of Abscession — the Pudge arcana, which pairs nicely with the new Greasepaint Gutbuster set.
And popular arcanas for other heroes:
- Fiery Soul of the Slayer — Lina;
- Bladeform Legacy — Juggernaut;
- Frost Avalanche — Crystal Maiden.
And if your inventory is full of unwanted items from older treasures, you can sell them on LIS-SKINS and put the money toward an arcana you actually want.
