Description

What the Lantern Is

Chinese Lantern is a Rust paper lantern released for the lunar new year. It is not a finish but a light source in its own right: crafted in game, hung inside a base and burning low grade fuel.

How It Differs From the Ordinary Lantern

The item is filed under Misc and belongs to decorative lighting — a red paper lantern in the traditional style.

Crafting it in game is open to anyone holding a copy in their Steam inventory. Trading or breaking the item down removes that ability along with it.

The recipe runs on cloth and low grade fuel, both of them ordinary materials that take no particular effort to gather.

A related version with a white glow exists as well, so the theme can be split across different rooms if you want the variety.

Light Inside a Base

The key difference is mounting. A standard Lantern goes on a flat surface, while the Chinese one can be suspended from a ceiling.

For a base that changes a fair amount: light falls from above, floors and corridors are lit more evenly, and benches are not cluttered with an extra object.

The glow it gives is soft and steady, without the flicker some of the game's light sources produce.

It runs on low grade fuel like most early lighting, so there is no wiring to run and no generator to set up for it.

Getting It and Putting It Up

Lighting in Rust is far more practical than a newcomer tends to assume. The server spends half its cycle in darkness, and an unlit base turns into a maze.

Hung lanterns mark out the route: door to boxes, boxes to smelting. In the dark that saves the seconds you occasionally turn out to need.

There is a cost to keep in mind. Light escapes through open frames and tells anyone outside that somebody is home.

Which is why lanterns usually go up in the inner rooms while the outer ring is left dark.

The Price

After purchase the item lands in your Steam inventory and the lantern's recipe appears in the in-game craft menu.

From there it behaves like any other deployable: build it, hold it, aim at a ceiling and place it.

To make it burn you load it with low grade fuel and switch it on. Empty, it just hangs there as decoration.

There is no cap on how many you hang — the only limit is how much material you are willing to spend.

Where to Buy Chinese Lantern

The lantern costs a couple of dollars and belongs to the cheapest end of the Rust catalogue.

That is normal for seasonal decorative items: they are released in volume, and unlike weapons not everybody bothers with them.

The figure wakes up around the lunar new year, when the theme is back in front of everyone, and behaves evenly the rest of the time.

What the lantern costs at this moment is shown in the card at the start of the page.

The lantern is picked up on LIS-SKINS from here: a Steam authorisation, the offer you chose, and any of the supported payment methods.

Those are card, cryptocurrency or electronic wallet, and the item arrives in your inventory as soon as the payment clears.

Selling it back runs through the same marketplace, with money going out to a card rather than to an internal Steam account.

The remaining new year and interior pieces for Rust sit nearby in the catalogue, so a themed base can be furnished in one pass.
