Recently, Valve released the massive "Rush Hour" update for Counter-Strike 2. And while the developers vividly described the new 3v3 mode and gameplay tweaks in the official patch notes, they kept quiet about the most interesting part — pet chickens.
Since Valve decided to make this a true "easter egg," all current information is being gathered by dataminers and the players themselves. Here is how this new system works.
How to Get a Chicken Egg
You won't be able to buy an egg from the in-game store or the Steam Community Market. The only confirmed way to acquire a future pet is through the Weekly Drop.
If an egg drops for you, it replaces the standard reward system. You will have to sacrifice both reward slots (for example, giving up a skin and a case) to claim it. It is not yet known whether the egg drop is completely random, or if every account is guaranteed to get one eventually.
The Life Cycle: From Egg to Pet
After claiming the egg, you won't find it in your standard inventory next to your cases. It will appear in a small wicker basket right on the main menu, next to your character model.
The Egg Stage: It simply rests in the menu. Hovering the cursor over it reveals the status: "Your egg will hatch soon."
The Chick: After some time (the incubation period), an animation triggers, and a baby chick is born. You can interact with it: pet it and even give it a name.
The Adult Chicken: By using special "chicken feed," the chick will eventually grow into a full-sized chicken. Adult birds can perform tricks, sit on your character's shoulder in the loadout screen, and pose in a special photo booth.
You can keep track of your flock through the Hatchbook — a new collection interface that works exactly like a photo album for your pets.
Breeds and Rarity Levels
Dataminers have already dug into the game files and discovered over 30 unique colorways for three different breeds:
Standard Chicken
Polish Chicken — featuring a funny feathered crest on its head.
Silkie Chicken — soft and fluffy.
Among them are classic variants (white, brown) as well as completely crazy ones: acid-green, neon-purple, and gradient colors. The community is almost certain there will be a rarity system in the game, but there are no official drop rates from Valve yet.
Can They Be Traded or Sold?
At the moment, chickens and eggs in CS2 are untradable. They cannot be listed on the Steam Community Market.
However, the presence of an entire album (Hatchbook) and 30+ skin variations strongly hints that Valve is preparing to open up a secondary market.
