Every CT-side match eventually brings the same choice: stick with the familiar M4A4 or switch to the M4A1-S. The debate goes back to CS:GO, and CS2 made it easier still — you can keep both rifles in your loadout at once and switch between rounds at no cost.

M4A1-S vs M4A4 in CS2 is a question settled not in favor of the "better" rifle but of the one that fits your role on the map. The M4A1-S gives higher first-shot accuracy, softer recoil and silent fire, while the M4A4 wins on ammo count and a higher fire rate — in drawn-out fights that often decides the round. Below we break down both rifles by the numbers, see what the pros pick in 2026, and land on who each one suits.

M4A1-S and M4A4 stats compared

Since the January 28, 2025 patch the economic side of the choice has all but vanished — Valve equalized the prices, and both rifles now cost $2,900. Before that patch the M4A4 ran pricier, around $3,000-3,100, and the gap was a real argument for the M4A1-S on force-buys. Now that price is the same, the deciders are damage, fire rate, magazine size and accuracy. Valve has changed the M4A4 stats more than once, so it is worth checking current figures.

Damage and shots to kill

On damage the M4A1-S leads — 38 per hit against 33 for the M4A4. Within 12 meters that is a one-bullet difference: the M4A1-S kills an armored opponent in four body shots, while the M4A4 needs five. Past 12 meters the M4A1-S damage falls off more sharply and the gap closes — both then need five body shots. Note the headshot modifier too: the M4A1-S one is lower, so a single shot to a helmeted head does not kill and you need one more, whereas the M4A4, with its more generous headshot multiplier, sometimes finishes faster.

Fire rate

Fire rate runs the other way. The M4A4 fires at 666 rounds per minute, the M4A1-S at 600. At short range the M4A4 higher rate partly offsets its lower per-bullet damage, so total time to kill in close fights comes out almost even.

Magazine and reserve ammo

The magazine is where the M4A4 wins outright. It holds 30 rounds plus 90 in reserve, 120 shots in all. The M4A1-S has just 20 in the mag and 80 in reserve — 100 total. The gap is felt most when holding a site against several enemies in a row or shooting through smokes, where the M4A1-S runs dry fast. On March 18, 2026 Valve reworked the reload mechanic: rounds left in the magazine are now discarded entirely on reload, and reserve is counted in magazines rather than per bullet. For the M4A1-S, with its already modest reserve, that was a clear nerf.

Accuracy and spray control

On accuracy and recoil control the M4A1-S comes out ahead — its spray pattern is softer, standing spread is smaller and the first bullet lands truer. The difference shows most in the first 10-12 shots of a spray: the M4A4 recoil is sharper, the bullets climb and drift faster, so the rifle takes more practice. Players who have not learned the spray patterns yet usually progress faster on the M4A1-S, then move to the M4A4 for the extra ammo.

M4A4 vs M4A1-S stat table

So you do not have to hunt through the text for a number, the full comparison is easier to read in one table.

Fire rate666 rpm600 rpm
Magazine30 rounds20 rounds
Reserve90 rounds80 rounds
Standing accuracy≈5.505.40

The numbers explain why the rifles cover different roles on the CT side. The M4A4 has three obvious strengths:

  • a larger ammo pool — 120 rounds against 100 for the M4A1-S, enough for several fights in a row;

  • a higher fire rate — better in close range and on multi-kills;

  • no downside from lacking a silencer — the rifle is set up for aggressive play out of the box.

Strengths and weaknesses of each rifle

The M4A4 weaknesses are just as clear from the stats: sharper recoil that takes practice, and tracers that give away the shooter position. The M4A1-S offsets this with a different set of upsides:

  • higher per-bullet damage and soft recoil that is friendly to newcomers;

  • a silencer that removes tracers and lowers the shot volume;

  • a stable first bullet that pays off at long range.

The M4A1-S main downside is its modest ammo, which turns holding a site against several enemies in a row into a gamble — especially after the March reload update.

What the pros choose

At Tier-1 events the picture still favors the M4A1-S: by frag share in top teams it clearly leads the M4A4, by roughly a two-to-one margin. For pros this is mostly about recoil control and an information edge — the silencer hides tracers when shooting through smokes, and the soft first bullet lets them reliably take rounds at long range, which is prized on maps like Nuke, Inferno or Anubis.

That said, the gap is narrowing. After the reload rework on March 18, 2026, some aggressive riflers and anchor players started picking the M4A4 more often — the M4A1-S trimmed reserve made holding a site under pressure noticeably harder. On maps with frequent multi-frags like Dust2, Cache and Mirage teams increasingly pick the M4A4, while on positions with long corridors and passive play the M4A1-S stays the priority.

The verdict: M4A1-S or M4A4

There is no clean answer, and both the pro-scene stats and the table above bear that out. The topic resurfaces after every major patch, but the takeaway is usually the same: both rifles can win rounds if the player understands their strengths and does not try to use one gun for every situation. The comparison is not about finding the strongest rifle but about matching the tool to your role, the map and your recoil control.

Newcomers and players still getting used to spray patterns are usually more comfortable with the M4A1-S — soft recoil and a precise first shot forgive aiming mistakes. Those who control the spray confidently and often hold a site alone against several enemies are better served by the M4A4 — the ammo pool and high fire rate pay off in long fights. The difference is sharpest on positions with long sightlines: there the M4A1-S silencer and accuracy give an information edge that ammo alone struggles to offset.

The best players keep both rifles in the loadout and switch by situation — by map, position and the team economy. Once a round, ask yourself a simple question: is stealth and accuracy more important right now, or a reserve of ammo in case you meet several enemies at once?

The rifle is only half the job; the other half is how it looks.
